Healing in harmony.

Clients love talking about music in therapy, but a lot of them don’t recognize how they can incorporate it into play during sessions. It’s so much more than just the music that they are listening to, it’s also what the music is conveying; but elements of the lyrics do they identify with the most, and how the music allows them to cope with essential parts of their life.

Yes, music is definitely a way for clients to have their breakthrough, and can be the scope of each session once you choose to bring songs that are aligned with where you are in your life.

Are you thinking about the possibility of therapy, but realizing that music might be a helpful tool for you to use in each session to work through the elements of your life? Then that’s wonderful. You want to be able to use the things that already support you.

Music is life, and if you're thinking about therapy and want your playlist to be your guide, I think it’s an excellent opportunity for you to start the process.

Here are some other benefits of music in therapy:

  • Supports emotional expression - Helps fill some of the gaps when you don’t have the right words to say in the moment.

  • Stimulate the brain and improve cognitive processing - Will help you recall parts of your emotions based on the circumstances that you are going through. Will be able to activate specific parts of the brain to allow for the emotional release to flow more easily.

  • Can increase connection with self - Realizing that you are not alone with your concerns by listening to music, helps alot. The story behind the music allows you to piece together parts of your story that you feel like you are unable to share—providing a sense of understanding on your journey.

  • If you believe music can be a helpful tool, discuss it with your therapist and consider utilizing your playlist in each session.
