Do you think your therapist matches your kind of energy?
Do you feel a connection with the therapist, and are you comfortable? It's critical to understand that when you are in the space.
I know the importance of certain people matching your energy, especially if you appreciate the energy you are giving off. Right? In terms of therapy, I recognize that the energy may not be 100% with the therapist, but you need to go off your intuition when you are in the space; these are some things to look out for.
The first impression: Does the therapist sound like a friendly, approachable, and naturally inviting person to talk with? How do those first 10 seconds feel over the phone or if you meet virtually for a 10-minute consultation?
Language: Do you find yourself to be a very assertive individual who needs someone to be direct? Or do you find yourself to be soft-spoken and need a therapist to match that? Sometimes you may be someone's polar opposite, but you will figure out how important that is when you are connecting with the person. I have clients who tell me that they like to curse in session and if it will offend me; however, if the therapist doesn't give off the impression that they are someone who does it as well, that can make the client want someone hesitant to express themselves authentically. If that will impede the nature of the sessions, it's essential to discuss it or find a different therapist with whom the client can connect, considering the nature of communication.
Age - Although Aliyah said it best," Age ain't nothing but a number", sometimes age means quite a bit in the therapy space. Due to age, you may want a therapist closer to your age based on life experiences, or someone older because they may provide more insight that you need to start making effective decisions for yourself.
Emotional Intelligence - I have the pleasure to work with alot of self-aware, deep thinkers. Because that is one of my strengths, I work very well with people who think intentionally about their words and behaviors. However, the client will recognize how deeply or not a therapist can delve into understanding their framework.
Those are some things to consider when evaluating a therapist's vibe and whether they will meet your needs.
