ABC’s in Therapy
Before engaging in therapy, or even if you are already in the process, it’s essential to consider what you need to be successful. If you consider these areas in different ways, you can determine why they are necessary for you to believe that you made the right choice by seeking therapy, or if you need to explore other options along the way.
Ask Questions - This will be needed as you think about and present your journey towards therapy, and even during it. Asking yourself the right questions and making sure you feel like therapy is the right move for you: You can think about the following questions:
What is motivating me to seek therapy?
Do I have a prejudiced bias about getting help?
What’s one word I would use to describe the potential of being in therapy or how I feel while I’m currently going through the process?
Did I feel forced to be in the space, and if so, how will that impact the nature of how I connect with the therapist?
Do I feel like my influences in my life will help or harm the process? Is my environment conducive for me to make active changes?
How am I measuring my success in therapy? How will I know it’s working or not working for me?
Believe in yourself - I know that the phrase is used quite often, but it’s so important to have the belief that you can make a change, especially when you have support. Intrinsic motivation is super helpful in this space, as it will help you understand the drive that you have to start progressing in your life. However, many people struggle with this concept and loving who they are. If you can identify the strengths you would bring to the table when seeking support for therapy, it will make it a little easier for you to achieve success and meet your goals.
Communicate Needs/ Feelings - I know this concept can often seem challenging, which is why people come to therapy in the first place, but this is going to be needed. Whether it’s discussing what you don’t have, so you can figure out how to meet your needs, and identify what is going on in your soul and mind, it will help you reach a place where you can express to the therapist how you are feeling about the process.
If we can simplify the way therapy is handled, it will put you in a position to start uncovering who you are and where you envision yourself moving forward.
